Hello! Your grandma Josephine Mendoza Perez was my Grandfather’s cousin. As I search for his roots, I think of her as my father was aware of her, and knew her. He is Angel L. Mendoza

Hi Donna, thanks for being in touch!

We have a fair amount of detail on my Grandfather’s story, but not quite as much on my Grandmother.

What I know is that she was born Bernadette Jacquez. Her father was French and her mom was maybe Latin, with a bit of Native American (Blackfoot Indian, I’ve heard).

She was born in El Paso, Texas. At some point her dad, Jacquez, went down to Mexico to work, and Bernadette and her mom stayed in El Paso with her mom’s parents, Bernadette’s grandparents. While Jacquez was gone, Bernadette’s mom died. Bernadette’s grandparents didn’t want to lose her when Jacquez came back, so when he returned, they told him that his wife and daughter had died and they showed him 2 graves.

That’s when they changed her name from Bernadette Jacquez to Josephine Mendoza. I don’t know how long the grandparents lived, but I think it wasn’t very long and Josie / Bernadette was an orphan. She stayed with a woman named Blasa and it seems like her life was pretty hard.

Those are all the people on my Grandmother’s side that I know of. My mom probably knows about your Grandfather, Angel L. Mendoza, but I don’t think I do.

Hi Glenn- Thanks for the information. What a story! When trying to figure out someone’s history, these major changes in ones life does not make it easy. If it is not too much to ask, would you mind asking your mom if she knows any more information about your grandmother? Let me give you the information of our connection. First of all, was grandmother born in March? I have the rest of it, but will refrain from putting actual dates and numbers if you don’t mind. If I have the right Josephine Perez, and I believe I do, we have the funeral cards of both your grandfather an your grandmother, I would like to tell you that …..
My name is Donna Mendoza (married Fetta). My father is Angel L. Mendoza. His father was Luis Mendoza. My grandfather was also given the Mendoza name, but his story is different. We do not have his other name, but he did say that he was not born Mendoza. In fact, he would say that he was a Camargo. His birthday is in Oct. in the mid. 1890’s. In El Paso, he lived with family who gave him the name Mendoza. They were Abraham and Apolonia Mendoza. He didn’t stay with them too long, but rather left for California. He did stay in touch with family, which includes your Grandparents. He died in the early 90’s and buried at Mission Hills. If your mom knew my Grandfather or even my dad, I would love to know if there is anything else I could learn. Thank you so much for your response. I appreciate your time and efforts.

Hi Glenn – Your Grandmother and my Grandmother were siblings. Maybe half or whole siblings. My father says they were half siblings. I have tried to find more information on Luis my grandfather but have hit a wall. Thank you for your post on your grandparents plot at Resurrection. Many relatives are there including my Grandmother Maria (Mary). Her mom and family knew of them as they would visit one another in L.A. I don’t think my grandfather was a Jaquez but I don’t really know, Hope all is well, your distant relative Donna.
